This picture shows how the steel reinforcements have rusted and the porous concrete has spalled off exposing the steels. This is a common occurrence in most of the beams.

… and this image shows how porous and poorly compacted the concrete is in many beams, a common problem throughout the floor.
Our floor needs your support
It’s not good news. A recent Quinquennial inspection of the church has revealed considerable deterioration in the reinforced concrete beams supporting the floor. Sadly these problems, resulting from poor construction, do not qualify for insurance cover.
Don’t panic, we are not in danger of immediate collapse, but the floor has clearly deteriorated badly during the 80 years since it was built. The longer it is left the worse it gets, the faster it will deteriorate. We really need to tackle the problem now to prevent it getting any worse and to prolong the life of our lovely church.
How will we tackle these problems?
We have consulted concrete restoration specialists who have provided recommendations and a specification for repairs.
We have engaged a specialist laboratory to carry out concrete testing and we have approached four specialist contractors to supply tenders from which we have received an acceptable quotation.
We anticipate the cost of repairs to be around £100,000, and to take about five weeks to complete.
We are appealing to you, our parishioners and friends of St Mary’s for donations, by cash, cheque or bank transfer, any amount will be very welcome. Cash can be put in the collection box in the entrance lobby or Cheques or notes; a special envelope is available at the back of church, please hand to Fr. Bede, Fr.
