Bishop Bosco’s Reflection on the Jubilee Icon

As we journey through this special Jubilee year, I’m delighted that the beautiful CAFOD Jubilee Icon, created by Ethiopian artist Mulugeta Araya, is making its way around some of our parishes here in the Diocese of Clifton.

There’s something truly special about this icon. It draws on the deep and ancient Christian tradition of Ethiopia, reminding us that our Church is global—rich in diversity, yet united in faith. It’s a powerful symbol of hope, justice, and the shared humanity we’re called to celebrate, especially during this Jubilee.

As the icon visits different communities across our diocese, it offers us a moment to pause and reflect – together. It’s a chance to pray, to be still, and to remember our connection to our brothers and sisters across the world, especially those who are struggling due to poverty, conflict or injustice. It also reminds us that Jubilee is not just about looking back – it’s about looking forward, and asking how we can help build a world that is fairer, kinder, and more rooted in love.

I encourage everyone – whether you’ve seen many icons or this is your first – to spend a few moments with it when it comes to one of the designated parishes.

Let it speak to your heart. Let it stir up compassion, and perhaps inspire a small step towards making a difference.

With every blessing,

+Bosco
